You may have noticed that I started running the Google Adsense flat adlinks at the top of the blog. In fact, I placed it below my list of hotlinks. That was intentional. I found that by placing content above your top ads, that the click-thru-rate is much higher. I would suggest to most bloggers that CPM of these flat adlinks is worth the minimal real estate they cost.
Note: You don't actually get paid when the reader clicks on these Ad links, rather it simply navigates the reader to a page of related ads. So, it requires a second click before you actually get paid.
